PRESS Corporation Limited (PCL) Group Chief Executive Officer Matthews Chikaonda says good leaders must not create followers but fellow leaders.

Chikaonda was speaking in Blantyre on Tuesday, 10 December 2013 during the graduation ceremony of 17 PCL group prospective leaders under the company's Leadership Development Programme.

The former Finance Minister and Reserve Bank Governor said good leaders must strive to leave a solid company or institution whenever their time is up.

"But when your company or organisation falls after you leave, then just know you are a bad leader," said Chikaonda.

The Leadership Development Programme is a PCL's initiative which started last year with the aim of developing future leaders for the group and its subsidiaries.

So far, a total of 30 members of staff have graduated from the programme facilitated by South Africa-based Red Point Consulting.

The seven-month intensive programme takes staff members through out the group's various stages of operations to give them hands-on experience of life at the top.

Chikaonda said the company is ready to absorb the managers into its system.

"At PCL we have a very strong and effective succession plan. But if we cannot absorb of them, then we can as well consider it as our contribution to the development of our country. Malawi needs quality leaders at all levels," said Chikaonda.

One of the prospective leaders, Andrew Mdoka working for Ethanol Company in Dwangwa thanked PCL for the leadership programme.

According to PCL, another 19 staff members will be enrolled into the programme in 2014.
